When your infant son is losing weight and you have tried everything your doctor has recommended to turn things around and nothing is working it is terrifying. I wrote about how my wife and I experienced this in the first blog post I wrote for this site and you can read it here if you haven’t done so already. This post is a follow up post to keep everyone up to date on how Flynn has recovered and what a joy he has been.
Now It Is Time To Recover
After we got Flynn home from the hospital there was still quite of bit of uncertainty with just how quickly he would rebound from his surgery and how quickly he would gain back the weight that he had lost and begin to catch up with where he needed to be on the World Health Organizations growth standards. We had an appointment with our family doctor the day after we got home from the hospital and that went well. He had already put on some weight since our last visit with her, mainly from the I.V. fluids they gave him in the hospital, so we were excited and optimistic as we went home knowing that we didn’t have any doctors appointments to go to until his two month appointment for his vaccines.
Two Month Check-Up
After almost two weeks without a doctors appointment it was time for Flynn to go see the doctor for his two month check up and we knew that he was putting on weight like he was supposed to for two reasons. The first was that he looked much better each day and the other was the fact that my wife, Erica, attended a breast feeding group each Monday at our local hospital where she would weigh Flynn before and after she breast fed him to see how much milk she was transferring to him. To say that Flynn was making up for lost time was an understatement. He was gaining weight at over an ounce a day! So when he was weighed at the doctors office it was no surprise to use that he already weighed just under 9 pounds. This was almost a 2 pound increase from his lowest weight prior to surgery!
Four Month Check-Up
We scheduled Flynn’s four month check up a bit late so I should really call this his four and a half month check up but regardless of that we were excited to go see the doctor because we knew Flynn had grown bigger and bigger each day. One of the moments when I realized the my son had grown quite a bit was when we were giving him a bath and he barely fit in the bathtub we bought for him. There were several other indications that he was growing big and strong but this is the one that I will remember. Funny how certain things stick inside your head! Erica also had not been to the breastfeeding clinic in a few weeks because she had gone back to work so we didn’t really know how much he would weigh.
Our appointment was scheduled for 3:30 and I was anxious all throughout the day because in my mind this was finally the end of the journey we had gone through as a family to get Flynn healthy and to finally be able to compare him to the WHO growth standards I mentioned previously. We ended up getting to our appointment and after the usual wait time in the lobby we finally heard one of the nurses call Flynn’s name and we headed back to room where we had been numerous times before to weigh and measure Flynn.
When we put Flynn on the scale in his birthday suit he weighed an amazing 16 lbs 9 oz! Erica and I both had a good idea that he would be over 16 pounds but to actually be closer to 17 pounds was a surprise to both of us. At this weight Flynn is at the 69 percentile which means his weight is similar to most of the children his age! I don’t think I have ever been so happy to hear that my son is an average child!
We knew that Flynn had grown in heights as well and and he measured 26 1/4″ tall and was now skyrocketing up the charts to the 84th percentile!
If you know my wife and I personally you already know that we both have rather large noggins so when Flynn’s craneal perimeter measured at 17.3″ we weren’t too surprised and figured that it was a tad on the big side. When I got online to see where this compared to others it was confirmed that he is going to have a big noggin just like mom and dad as he is in the 95 percentile!
I shot this video just the other day and it makes me smile watching just how happy he is in it. Be prepared though you get to hear my fabulous singing voice!
My next update on how Flynn is growing big and strong will be after his 6 month visit to the doctor!
